Depending on their intended usage, bows are constucted from a variety of materials, including fiberglass; Asian woods such as manikara kauki; brazilwood; carbon fiber, carbon graphite, and various composite materials; and the highly prized Brazilian pernambuco.
For the advanced player, the selection of a suitable bow is an extremely personal aspect of playing a stringed instrument. While quality and craftsmanship are clearly fundamental factors, there are many other significant considerations — some of them very individual and unique — that enter into the choice as well. Among these are personal technique and playing style — how the bow feels and responds in the hand of the artist, including individual anatomical considerations; the characteristics of the instrument with which the bow will be used, and the sound produced when bow and instrument interact; and the intended usage for the bow, including style of music and even sometimes the climate or environment. Not surprisingly, accomplished artists often utilize a number of different bows for varying performance situations.
